Does anyone know how to kill a bougainvillea?

This is a large, mature plant, about 8 years old. We have dug it out as deep as we can, but I know they are extremely hardy and withstand much abuse. I really do not want it growing back in this spot.

sounds like you killed it. Sad.
Reply:I think there is a product at home depot you pour on the root of the plant and it will die but chop it all off but the bottom so the thorns dont get ya..
Reply:I would wrap a nylon strap around the base of it and then tie the other end to to hitch of a truck and then slowly drive away. This will pull out the entire root system of your mature plant. Pull away very slowly or your Bougainvillea will bang your bumper.
Reply:i once had that plant in my garden too, but it was growing too fast.i cutted it evrytime it goes out frm our fence.was even tried to bonsai it but nevr.. what i did was i poured hot water on its roots. as simple as that..
Reply:cut back on the water and fertilizer and reduce its exposure to sunlight.
